An excellent short story that follows the "progress" of Evan from his pet-splicing youth, through his corporate spy adulthood, to his solar system-wide fame in old age. Each stage is a lovely vignette, and the post-human climax is just great. Thoroughly recommended - though make sure you don't read the New Internationalist reprinting which, bizarrely, chops off most of the concluding section and ruins the story.
